Bariatric surgery is a medical procedure designed to treat obesity and its related complications. Through different surgical techniques, the aim is to reduce the size of the stomach or alter the digestive system to limit the amount of food that can be ingested or absorbed.

Types of bariatric surgery:

  • Gastric Bypass : Considered the gold standard, this procedure combines a reduction in the size of the stomach with a bypass of the intestine, limiting both the intake and absorption of nutrients.

  • Gastric sleeve : This consists of reducing the stomach to a narrow tube, limiting the capacity of food without altering the absorption of nutrients.

  • Adjustable gastric band : This involves placing a band around the stomach to restrict the amount of food that can be eaten.

Most common benefits:

  1. Significant weight loss.

  2. Reducing the risk of obesity-related diseases such as type 2 diabetes, hypertension and sleep apnea.

  3. Improved quality of life and mobility.

Although the results are promising, bariatric surgery requires commitment from the patient to change their lifestyle. It is not a quick fix, but a tool that must be combined with long-term healthy habits.
